Gloucester County began soon after the settlement of Jamestown in 1607. The name Gloucester came from Henry Duke of Gloucester who was a son Charles 1. In the 17th century, the tip of land protruding into the York River, across from Yorktown Beach was named Tyndall's Point by Robert Tyndall who was a mapmaker for Captain John Smith. Later named Gloucester Point, fortifications were built here in 1667, and were rebuilt and strengthened may times from colonial days through the American Civil War. This site is also known as the "Second Surrender" in reference to American Revolution War at Yorktown. Gloucester, in Tidewater Virginia, is noted for its many historical landmarks that have remained undisturbed. The Old Debtors Prison dates from the mid-18th century; several old estates are located in this region near Gloucester and White Marsh. Long Bridge Ordinary, a stagecoach tavern built in 1732, is open during Garden Week in late April.
For recreation, Gloucester contains over 100 miles of shore line.
